Striving to be the best

Rasmussen R&R is a sand and gravel supplier that provides crushed rock, base, fill, and riprap. “We started in 2007, just when the market began to slide,” says Taylor Rasmussen, “to keep our guys working. C.A. Rasmussen invested in a portable crusher and put me in charge of day-to-day operations. When the work began to dry up, we began to supply material to wholesalers. After a year of scraping by with no work in the immediate future, I formed Rasmussen R&R and added sales and bookkeeping staff.”

Soon the company purchased its mining fleet, which now includes a Caterpillar D9 and a Hitachi 800 for excavating the mine site, a 980B for loading the crusher, a 980C for loading, a few smaller loaders for miscellaneous jobs and rental, a water truck, a service truck and a Hitachi 300 for sorting rip-rap.

“Our goal is to lead the industry in customer service, even when it’s tough,” says Rasmussen. “The weather at the quarry can get a little treacherous during the winter months, and it seems there’s always a large order and a tight deadline at the worst times. Once, we had a 16,000-ton order and we had 8,000 tons on the ground and another 8,000 tons to make over three days with a plant that can do 2,000 tons a day. A heavy rain came and the wind through the canyon reached 60-plus mph.

“During the next three days, we shipped 5,000 tons and processed 2,500 tons daily. When the storm was over, the job was done – every ton was delivered on time with material left over. That’s when I knew I truly love what I do.”

Growing up, Rasmussen worked for his dad at C.A. Rasmussen every summer, spring and winter break. “The day my dad offered me a job working on a fine-grading crew, I jumped at it,” he says. “I still remember going to my first Southern California Contractors Association (SCCA) meeting when I was 14 years old. I won a portable CD player in the raffle.”

Rasmussen joined SCCA for the networking and industry advocacy it provides. “The meetings are a great place to meet potential customers,” he says. “Plus, I firmly believe in what SCCA does for our industry. In California, my colleagues and I are looked at as bad guys. All my life, I’ve been hearing from people how my family’s business was destroying whatever city we were working in or how they didn’t like the work we did on a road.

“People see workers on a project and think ‘those guys are responsible for every problem I have with this project.’ SCCA fights for us on the government level and supports us at the local level.” “But the best part,” he says “is when my dad invited me to join SCCA, I knew it was because he was proud enough to introduce me to his peers. That means so much to me.”  Rasmussen R&R is located at 12000 Soledad Canyon Road, Canyon Country. Contact them at (661) 250-0668.
