SCCA History

The torch is passed—the late 1990s

Check out SCCA's Values and a list of our accomplishments over the past 34 years, as the Southern California Contractors Association has worked toward achieving the following goals:

By Al Atwood

Executive Vice President Emeritus

Editor’s Note: Al continues his history of the association’s 30 years of service with his memories of the executive officers of the late 1990s. He sees this as a critical time for the association as the industry matured and the leadership torch was passed to a new generation.

       Doug Burhoe --1995

SCCA'S President in 1995 was an old time construction man from a full time construction family. He attended high school in his native Reading, MA, and then studied at Northeastern University in Boston.

He got his construction training while working for his father, a home builder and developer, mainly in operating earthmoving equipment. Later Doug was employed by large earthmoving firms, such as Frederickson & Watson.

Aided by his wife Carol and three sons, D. W. Burhoe Construction Inc., started business in Ventura County. When SCCA was formed, they joined and Doug became an active member, serving on important committees, as a member of the Board of Directors and association offices.

During his administration SCCA prospered in membership, safety, legislation, public relations, labor relations and importance as a major part of the heavy construction industry.

Jack Blakely--1996

SCCA's 23rd president, Jack is a native son. He attended Hollywood High School and then studied engineering at West Coast University. After a short time in the aerospace industry, Jack located an outstanding SCCA construction firm, Nelson & Belding Contracting Corp. and made a career in heavy construction.

Jack is the second SCCA President from Nelson & Belding, as Arnold S. (Arnie) Nelson served in 1984.

Jack and his wife Marian, a high school English teacher, have a son John Blakely, who while employed by Nelson & Belding attended law school at night and is now a practicing attorney. with Kring & Chung, a valuable asset to SCCA, serving as an affiliate board member.

After serving on the SCCA Board of Directors for 18 years and as an association officer for three, Jack was well prepared for the presidency.

Greg Erickson--1997

SCCA’s President for 1997 was born in Los Angeles. The son of a brick mason, Greg worked as a Yard Boy for Hatch Masonry in 1968. He was graduated from Northview High School, Covina, and then attended Cal Poly Pomona where he majored in engineering.

In 1978 Greg joined the SCCA firm of McAfee & Morisette, where Leroy McAfee (SCCA President 1989) told him of the many benefits of SCCA membership.

Greg then went to Alcorn Fence Co., where Bob Alcorn, an old timer in construction and an SCCA booster, taught him more. Greg took his lessons well and in 1989 he became Alcorn’s CEO/President and RMO.

Bob Alcorn was awarded the SCCA Contractor of the Year Award in 1995 and passed away in 1996.

Greg Erickson was a tireless president. He actively supported Jack Blakely on the SCCA Safety Program Awards as vice president and continued to promote this important activity as president. During his administration, SCCA programs were reviewed and brought-up-to-date.

       Jim O’Kane--1998

Jim O’Kane was born in Pasadena, went to St Francis High School, LaCañada, and received his degree in Finance from Cal State Los Angeles.

Jim then followed his father Jim O'Kane, Sr. right into heavy engineering construction. Jim senior had a long career as an operator and co-owner of U. S. Paving Co.

Jim worked for his dad, starting as a laborer, then operator and seal coater. He took a time-out for military service in 1964-65 and then returned to U S Paving as an estimator, then vice president.

After his father's death in 1979, Jim stayed with U S Paving until 1984 when he joined forces with Jim Halverson and formed J. A. James Construction Co.,

They became very active members of SCCA. As a very active President, Jim gave attention and worked on improving conditions for SCCA members and the industry including, legislation, labor, public relations, finance, membership advancement, city, county and state government.

       Brad Cooke--1999

Brad Cooke is another native Californian who went to Lowell High School, Whittier, and received his degree in Economics from Occidental College.  Son of George Cooke, SCCA President 1988, George and Brad are the first father and son presidents for SCCA.

Brad and his wife Vicki have a son, Cameron, who may, in the fullness of time, become third SCCA President in the family.

George started Brad at the bottom rung—yard boy—cleaning concrete off 2X4s, etc. Many steps and years later Brad prepared bids and landed a contract. He proudly took it to his Dad and was told “you bid it now go and build it.”

As an SCCA officer and president Brad brought new ideas to SCCA. He became very active in association business, PAC committee, statewide labor matters, transportation, finance, insurance, L. A. city and county liaison, public relations and the SCCA Safety Program. He pointed out that SCCA and its members have the following: Energy, Vitality, & Strength, Youth, Experience & Progress, Camaraderie, Friendship & Fraternity.
